Welcome.

“I want to say a special thanks to you if you have purchased any of my work. Sales fund my passion (my wife says obsession).”

Muddy Fingers by Tom Somerville

“I strive to make pieces that others will enjoy and consider a sale a measure of that success".”

Each piece is marked “Muddy Fingers” and given a unique number. The first 2 numbers denote the year. The second the month it was glazed and the last 3 denote its place in sequence for that month.

For example, 20 03 122 created in 2020, glazed in March and was the 122nd piece to be completed that month.

Tom builds the bowls and plates on moulds which determine their shape. Agricultural equipment, balloons, funnels and woks are some of the found items that help shape Tom’s Creations.

If he likes a particular object, you are likely to find it built into several of his works.

Muddy Fingers

Pottery by Tom Somerville.

Tom Somerville’s passion is pottery inspired by nature. He lives and works in Helensville, Auckland and his brand is Muddy Fingers.

He met his wife while working in Tonga many years ago, and while he was living there he spent as much time a he could snorkelling about the reefs. He loved those secret little worlds that were abuzz with life. Nowadays they have a joint passion for gardening. As a result of these 2 influences his work tends to be inspired by foliage, flowers, corals & fish.

He realised that he loved art and making things at an early age, especially things that might be appreciated and cherished.

As a consequence of a light bulb moment in 2016, he enrolled in a pottery class which changed everything.

This process can take about 4 – 6 weeks.

  • The first step if you commission a piece is to take screen shots of what you like. Email this to muddyfingersnz@gmail.com and include specific features you would like, such as a rim style and glaze colour.

  • You will receive an email with a price including shipment if appropriate (some will be pick up only).

  • When your new piece is ready for shipping, you will be sent a photo. If you like what you see then you will be sent an invoice for payment prior to shipment.

  • NOTE: Many of the bowls and all plates are designed so they can be hung . This means you can store them on a wall and bring them down to use. Also all glazes are food safe.
